About American Cockroaches
American cockroaches are the largest common cockroach species in Orange County, growing over 2 inches long. Often called palmetto bugs or waterbugs, they are reddish-brown with a yellowish figure-eight pattern on the back of the head. Unlike German cockroaches, they primarily live outdoors in sewer systems, storm drains, and mulch beds, but frequently enter homes through drain pipes and gaps around doors. They are strong fliers in warm weather and can startle homeowners with sudden flight. American cockroaches thrive in moist environments and are commonly found in basements, laundry rooms, and around plumbing fixtures.
How to Identify American Cockroaches
- Reddish-brown, 1.5 to 2 inches long, making them the largest common roach
- Yellowish figure-eight pattern on the pronotum behind the head
- Fully developed wings that allow short flights in warm conditions
- Droppings resemble small mouse droppings with ridged sides
Lifecycle
American cockroaches develop slowly compared to German cockroaches. Females produce an egg case roughly every 6 days, each containing about 16 eggs. Nymphs take 6 to 12 months to mature through 10 to 13 molts. Adults can live for over a year, making established populations long-lasting and resilient.
Health & Property Risks
- Carry and spread pathogens including Salmonella and Streptococcus
- Contaminate food and surfaces with bacteria from sewers and drains
- Produce allergens that worsen asthma symptoms in indoor environments
